John Atwater, began his artistic career as a commercial artist before moving into a career as a maritime artist. Initially, Atwater worked mostly in watercolors, and he won awards in American Watercolor Society Annual Exhibitions in 1985, 1988, and 1989. Using paint with the self-assuredness of a born colorist, he transforms ordinary scenery into a brilliant tapestry of hues and textures. He has been working steadily at his easel for 50 hours a week since his graduation from Washington University. Each summer he goes to the coast of Maine specifically to observe and gather material for next year's paintings.
